What does Root Canal Treatment involve?

Root canal treatment is often prescribed for patients suffering from a dying or dead nerve in one or more of their teeth. The primary causes of nerve death are decay and trauma. For example, if a tooth has a large cavity, the nerve inside the tooth becomes infected. Then it is necessary to remove that nerve and replace it with a rubber-based material that will keep the infection out.

What is the dental pulp?

The dental pulp is the part of a tooth where a root canal treatment is done. The dental pulp normally comprises of lymph and blood vessels and nerves. When this gets infected, it becomes inflamed. And since a tooth is a very rigid structure, the inflammation cuts off the blood supply to the tooth and the nerve. This causes the nerve to die, triggering pain for the patient.

What does Root Canal Treatment Involve?

Root canal treatment typically involves the removal of decay and nerves, cleaning of the nerve canals within each root and replacing and filling those canals with a rubber material. Since this material is sealed in the root canal, it prevents any future infection of the tooth. Following every root canal procedure, a crown is placed on the treated tooth. This is placed to prevent any fractures of the root canalled tooth due to the stoppage of the blood supply.
