Full Metal Cast Gold Restorations –Indications So have a cavity, you’ve broken a tooth, or lost a tooth. You are wondering what type of dental restoration you need. A friend suggests you consider gold, but that sounds crazy – with porcelain and tooth-colored materials available, nobody uses gold for crowns and bridges anymore, right? Make an appointment with Dr. Andrew Spath to learn more about gold restorations, and to get that tooth fixed, attractively and permanently. In medical terminology, “indications” are symptoms, causes, or other factors that help the doctor determine the best treatment method. Gold has been used in dentistry since about 1800, and is still considered the best choice for a variety of dental indications. Dr. Spath is knowledgeable, skilled, and experienced in the use of gold. Many natural properties of gold make it strong, durable, and biocompatible – perfect for full metal cast restorations used in dental crowns and bridges.
A tooth that has a large area of decay, is badly cracked, or is broken may need a crown. This is a cap which encircles the tooth. The tooth is prepped – decay removed and the structure reshaped.
The crown is precisely fabricated in a lab, and bonded to the tooth, protecting it from further damage. To repair a tooth that is lost or missing, you may need a bridge or dental implant. A bridge, sometimes called a fixed partial denture, involves placing crowns on the teeth on either side of the space, and attaching an artificial tooth to those crowns. A dental implant is a stand-alone restoration for a lost or missing tooth. An artificial (usually titanium) root is placed into the jawbone. Once healed, a metal abutment or post is inserted into the root, and a crown is affixed to the abutment to replace the tooth.
In any of these situations, a cast gold crown may be indicated, since it is aesthetic and the durability and wear resistance is unsurpassed. Dr. Spath will explain your options to be sure your restoration looks great and lasts for years.
